Course Survey FAQ

Introduction

Colorado State University requires that, in accordance with Section I.8 of of the Academic Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual, all course instructors conduct "at least one student survey of all the courses they teach through a system utilizing the standardized University-wide instrument."

How Do I Activate the Survey for my Courses?

Activation of the course survey by instructors is not needed.

Where may I view course survey results?

For semesters prior to Fall 2019 back to Spring 2011 Search Course Survey Results

Fall 2019 forward – Access reports in SmartEvals Dashboard located in Canvas

Will everyone be able to view student comments?

No. Only those with permission according to each department's code may view the comments.

Are students required to sign their surveys?

No. Signatures are requested, but not required. Please note that Section E.12.1 of the Academic Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual states, in part, that "anonymous letters or comments shall not be used to evaluate teaching, except with the consent of the instructor or as authorized in a department's code."

If students choose not to sign a form, their comments may be used for evaluation purposes only if the instructor allows that use.

What should students use to complete the survey?

Students can use either an Apple or an Android device, or any brand of laptop with Wi-Fi connectivity.

May instructors use the survey for mid-semester feedback?

Currently, the survey may only be used at the end of the semester, even if the class is co-taught where one instructor teaches the first half and the other instructor teaches the second half. Please open the survey at the end of the semester and ask the students to complete the survey for both instructors.

Students should complete the surveys in Canvas only.

May instructors customize the survey questions? May they add questions?

Instructors may add up to FIVE additional custom questions. These should be added prior to the survey period beginning. Instructions can be found under Survey Instructions/Information. Please access your SmartEvals Dashboard to verify the opening and closing dates of the current survey period.

How does the survey handle feedback to multiple instructors?

The current survey lists each instructor within the body of the survey. Please have students complete the survey for any instructor that they interacted with during the semester.

May a department review the survey comments of its instructors and GTAs?

Section E.12.1 of the Academic Faculty and Administrative Professional Manual states, in part, that "anonymous letters or comments shall not be used to evaluate teaching, except with the consent of the instructor or as authorized in a department's code."

If your department code allows this practice, then online access to the survey results can be granted to department representatives for review purposes.

In all other cases, instructors must be asked to provide access to the forms. Please be aware that instructors are under no obligation to agree to that request.

For Fall Semester 2019 and beyond, please email pdf reports to the individual who may need these for evaluation purposes. We are working to program the SmartEvals system to send these out to authorized department heads/chairs and appreciate your patience.
